Objective
The Mahatma Gandhi NREGS is an Act to provide a legal guarantee of 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. It is a demand driven scheme, approved by the Indian Parliament in September, 2005. It was renamed as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act on 2nd October, 2009. Salient Features
- 100 days' wage emplyment assurance
- Unemployment allowance if work not provided within 15 days of an application for work

Eligibility Criteria
Any person who is above the age of 18 and resides in rural areas is entitled to apply for work having Job Card which is the basic legal document in order to get employment.
Obtaining Job Card
A household interested in availing of the schemes' benefit has to make an application for registration through the prescribed written Form or orally. The registration form and process are free of cost. The application for registration has to made to the Gram Panchayat or Block Office.
Method of applying for the scheme
Any Indian citizen above the age of 18 years and residing in a rural area can apply for the scheme. To get employment, the job seeker should submit the Application Form / a written application along with the necessary required documents to the Gram Panchayat or Programme Officer (at Block Office).

- Water Conservation & Water Harvesting
- Drought Proofing (including plantation & afforestation)
- Irrigation canals including micro & minor irrigation works
- Flood Control & Protection Works
- Minor irrigation, horticulture & land development on the land of SC/ST/BPL/IAY and land reform beneficiaries
- Renovation of traditional water bodies including desilting of tanks
- Land Development
- Rural Connectivity
- Gram Panchayat Bhawan & Bharat Nirman Rajiv Gandhi Sewa Kendra construction
